Day 2 – Holyhead Golf Club

Posted under Stan's Blog

I arrived at the Golf club 1100 hrs. I introduced myself to the Golf Director Steve Elliott.

I was welcomed to the golf club and he stated that they would not be taking the challenge up

holyhead-1st-8th.jpgLooking from the elevated clubhouse, you have views across the 1st tee, the 8th green and the 18th tee to green with further views of the surrounding landscape which blends into a tranquil setting. My caddy, Fred, stated he last played the course some 50 years prior to my visit, so I was hoping that he would give me some good advice.

The weather was calm and sunny to start, with all the recent wet weather one could not get much run on the ball. The greens had been recently fed and dressed and the course had been well maintained and manicured.

My driving off the tee produced 14 of the 18 fairways hit. Two lost balls into the gorse and five 3 putts just put me over par for the course.

Result:

Gross score: Out: 42 In: 45 Total:87

Handicap: 13

Nett score: 74

Stableford: Out:16 In:14 Total:30

LOST to the course

Wind factor: Light

Day 1 – Captains Drive-in

Posted under Stan's Blog

Looking out through the window on Saturday morning seeing the rain that had been coming down for the last 48 hours, the road was like a river and my thoughts as to whether the Drive in would have to be cancelled went through my mind. The forecast was to expect further rain for the next few days which didn’t give me any confidence. A quick phone call to the head green keeper to see if the course would be playable was made, it was agreed that a shortened course would be playable if there was no more heavy rain.

That evening having sent out e-mails out to all those that had had confirmed they would be there to say it would be a 9 hole competition only. Looking through my e-mail box there were replies from the media to say that they couldn’t be there as other news events had taken a priority, as well as some who had been taken ill with the flu bug that I had a few weeks before.

It is said that in the face of adversity life has a way of showing you other ways to overcome the problems that are there. All the months collating and planning the day seemed to be falling apart at the last minute.

On awaking the next morning I drew back the curtains to see the sun low in the sky with the odd fluffy white cloud dotted across the horizon. My prayers had been answered.

On arriving at the golf club looking across the valley with the sun shining brightly I knew it was going to be a great day.
